The government is negotiating with investors to overhaul AirtelTigo – Sam George

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has revealed that the government is in advanced negotiations with a new strategic investor to support and potentially take over operations at AirtelTigo, the state-owned telecommunications provider.

The announcement was made during a stakeholder meeting with leaders in the telecom industry on Friday, May 30, 2025. The move is part of a broader government initiative to revitalize AirtelTigo and boost competition within Ghana’s telecom sector.

“For the first time, I can confirm that we are in negotiations with a strategic partner to support AirtelTigo,” Mr. George stated. “We’ve set a 60-day deadline to finalize the deal, and by the end of the third quarter, we anticipate enhanced services will be fully rolled out.”

Since the government assumed control of AirtelTigo in 2021, the company has faced significant challenges competing with industry leaders like MTN and Telecel. The new partnership is expected to bring in fresh capital and technical expertise to help reposition the company.

In addition to the AirtelTigo developments, the Minister announced Cabinet’s approval for the release of new spectrum resources to leading telecom providers, including MTN and Telecel. The additional spectrum is intended to support infrastructure expansion and improve service quality.

“The regulators have also informed me of special license requests from AT and Telecel, who are currently experiencing spectrum shortages. These operators may soon access additional resources via the NGIC platform—MTN is also welcome to participate,” Mr. George added.

These initiatives signal the government’s renewed commitment to strengthening Ghana’s telecom landscape through innovation, enhanced network infrastructure, and improved services for consumers.
