Sefwi Aboronhia Assembly member accuses galamsey of ruining roads

The Assembly Member for Sefwi Aboronhia in the Akontombra of the Western North Region, Eric Okrah, claims a local mining firm’s operations are causing significant damage to the community’s roads.

According to Okrah, the mining firm’s officials arrived with heavy machinery, promising to repair the roads, but instead, they allegedly used the opportunity to engage in illegal mining activities along the roadside.

“There were no signboards or official notices to indicate it was a government-approved project,” Okrah said. “He only fixed roads where he could benefit from gold, leaving the rest in terrible condition.”

He further explained that the poor state of the roads is causing difficulties for drivers and motorcycle riders and has also impacted the ability of health and service workers to access the community.

“Our farmers are suffering; transporting goods to and from the farms has become a serious problem due to the bad shape of the roads,” Okrah added.

Okrah is appealing to the government for immediate intervention in the road construction to benefit the people of Sefwi Aboronhia.

Community members echoed the Assembly Member’s concerns, expressing frustration over the miners’ actions, which they claim have worsened the roads, and called on authorities to hold them accountable.
