The Member of Parliament for Effia Constituency, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko has expressed strong disapproval over the arrest of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, who serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Boamah-Nyarko lambasted the arrest of Wontumi, deeming it unnecessary and unfair, and likening the treatment to that of notorious criminals rather than a respected party official.
“The arrest was handled in a way that suggested Wontumi was a high-risk criminal, which was completely unwarranted,” he stated.
He wondered why Chairman Wontumi was targeted while others involved in similar activities appeared to be left off the hook.
“Why are we interested in only Wontumi? Are we saying that for the entire country, it is only Wontumi that is doing that business?” he asked.
Boamah-Nyarko noted that despite rampant illegal mining in areas like Tarkwa, Bogoso, and Prestea, the spotlight was inexplicably on Wontumi.
According to him, he believed targeting political figures like Chairman Wontumi would be seen as “political persecution.”
Boamah-Nyarko stressed that no one is above the law, even as he expressed reservations about Wontumi’s arrest.
“You can always go and arrest Chairman Wontumi,” he said, adding that everyone suspected of illegal mining should be investigated.
Boamah-Nyarko warned that Ghana would collapse if politics continues to dominate the country’s decision-making.
“If we follow politics, this country will collapse,” he stated.
