PURC demands report from GRIDCo, ECG, and NEDCo over ongoing power instability

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) convened an emergency stakeholder meeting on Friday, May 23, 2025, with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) to address ongoing electricity supply challenges and unplanned outages affecting parts of the country.

The meeting followed growing consumer complaints and monitoring by the Commission, aimed at identifying the root causes of the disruptions, assessing operational challenges, and ensuring coordinated action to restore and stabilize power supply.

Dr. Shafic Suleman, Executive Secretary of PURC, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding consumer interests and enforcing service standards.

“The Commission is seriously concerned about the frequent power outages in some regions. This meeting is a crucial step in identifying the causes and ensuring swift corrective action by all parties involved,” he stated.

During the session, GRIDCo, ECG, and NEDCo outlined several technical and operational issues contributing to the instability, including feeder faults, insufficient Bulk Supply Points (BSPs), network tampering, system overloads, overgrown vegetation, and adverse weather effects.

Following these briefings, the commission instructed the utilities to submit detailed reports outlining current challenges, immediate remedial actions, and long-term measures to prevent future occurrences.

PURC also stressed the importance of improved public communication during power disruptions to foster transparency and build consumer trust. It pledged to ensure strict adherence to performance standards and urged the public to continue reporting utility-related challenges in their communities.

The commission reiterated its ongoing commitment to protecting both consumers and service providers while closely monitoring the situation to uphold quality and reliability in electricity delivery nationwide.
