Former Majority Leader, Osei-Kyei Mensah Bonsu, has put forth strong recommendations regarding the current structures of the Regional and Constituency Executive Committees in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) constitution.
He believes that restructuring these committees will better position the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
In his analysis, Mensah Bonsu proposed the amendment of Article 9, Clause 1(a) of the party’s constitution, suggesting a new composition that includes the following members:
- Regional Chairperson
- Chairperson of the Regional NPP Caucus in Parliament
- Regional Minister (if the party is in government)
- Chairperson of the Regional Council of Elders
- Chairperson of the Regional Council of Patrons
- 1st Regional Vice-Chairperson
- 2nd Regional Vice-Chairperson
- Regional Secretary
- Deputy Regional Secretary
- Regional Organiser
- Regional Women Organiser
- Regional Youth Organiser
- Deputy Regional Organiser
- Deputy Regional Women Organiser
- Deputy Regional Youth Organiser
- Regional Nasara Coordinator
- Regional Communications Officer
- Deputy Regional Communications Officer
- Deputy Regional Nasara Coordinator
- Members of Parliament from the region
- Constituency Chairpersons
- Parliamentary Candidates
- Former Regional Chairperson
- Dean of MMDCEs in the region (when the party is in government)
He also recommends that the amendments include provisions for the incumbent MMDCEs in the various districts within the region (when the party is in government), as well as former MPs, former Regional Secretaries, former Regional Organisers, former Regional Women and Youth Organisers, and all former Regional officers.
These individuals would be eligible to attend Regional Executive Committee meetings but would not have voting rights.
The seasoned politician further suggested amendments to Article 7, Clause 2 regarding the composition of the Constituency Executive Committee, proposing the following members:
- Constituency Chairperson
- Member of Parliament
- Parliamentary Candidate
- 1st Constituency Vice-Chairperson
- 2nd Constituency Vice-Chairperson
- MMDCE (when the party is in government)
- Chairman of the Constituency Council of Elders
- Former Member of Parliament for the Constituency
- Constituency Secretary
- Constituency Assistant Secretary
- Constituency Treasurer
- Constituency Organiser
- Constituency Women Organiser
- Constituency Youth Organiser
- Constituency Nasara Coordinator
- Deputy Constituency Organiser
- Deputy Constituency Women Organiser
- Deputy Constituency Youth Organiser
- Deputy Constituency Nasara Coordinator
- Constituency Communications Officer
- Constituency Research/Electoral Officer
- Former Parliamentary Candidate
- Former Constituency Chairperson
The veteran politician is confident that these proposed changes will rejuvenate the party’s base and create a formidable front as they approach the next election and beyond.
