Residents of Mempeasem set to embark on peaceful demonstration over bad roads

The people of Mempeasem, a community in the STMA, are preparing to stage a peaceful protest over the terrible condition of their roads.

According to the Assembly Member for the area, Mr Gabriel Mensah, the roads have been in a poor state for several years, and all efforts to get them fixed have failed.

He spoke about the issue during an interview on Spice FM’s Morning Show. Mr. Mensah explained that a Chinese company called UNICEM worked in the area in 2019 and 2020.

They used heavy trucks on the newly built road, and this caused it to spoil quickly within just three months.

Although Mr. Mensah was not the Assembly Member at the time, he took it upon himself to investigate the issue.

He later uncovered a signed agreement between STMA, UNICEM, and the Urban Roads Department, which included a GHS 1.9 million contract to repair the road following the damage. Despite the agreement, the road remains unrepaired.

In August 2023, Mr. Mensah and the town’s chief submitted a petition to STMA, but all they received were empty promises.

Even after Mr. Mensah became the Assembly Member, he continued to raise the issue at meetings.

While authorities assured him that machines would be brought in to begin the work, nothing ever materialized.

This has left residents, particularly the youth, feeling frustrated. Due to this long delay and broken promises, the people of Mempɛasem have decided to protest.

Mr Mensah said the demonstration will be peaceful and will involve the youth, the chiefs, and other residents.

They will walk from Mempɛasem Park to the STMA office to present another petition. He hopes that this public action will finally push the authorities to fix the roads.
