Minority calls for Sammy Gyamfi’s suspension over viral video showing dollar giveaway

Minority Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have strongly condemned the conduct of Sammy Gyamfi, Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD) and National Communications Officer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), following a viral video showing him handing an undisclosed sum of U.S. dollars to Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa—a former fetish priestess turned evangelist.

At a press conference held on Monday, May 12, 2025, the NPP MPs described public efforts to dismiss the incident as “ridiculous,” asserting that Gyamfi’s actions represented a blatant abuse of office and a betrayal of public trust.

“It is ridiculous to suggest that Sammy Gyamfi did no wrong, given the opulence and naked betrayal of public mandate,” said Dr. Kabiru Tia Mahama, MP for Walewale and a member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, who addressed the media on behalf of the Minority.

The group is demanding Gyamfi’s immediate suspension pending an impartial investigation into the origin of the foreign currency displayed in the video. While Gyamfi has since issued an apology and is expected to meet with Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, the Minority insists that a formal inquiry and accountability are essential.

“This act violates the Code of Conduct for public officers, contravenes the Foreign Exchange Act, and breaches the Currency Act,” Dr. Mahama stated. “Sammy Gyamfi is not ignorant of the law—he is a seasoned lawyer who fully understands the legal consequences of his actions. He must be held accountable.”

The Minority also urged President Mahama to intervene, emphasizing the need for transparency, ethical leadership, and strict adherence to legal standards.

“We are calling for a full investigation into the source of the U.S. dollars seen in the viral footage,” Dr. Mahama concluded.
