Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ $18 million U.S. defamation verdict reduced to $500

A U.S. court has ruled that Ghanaian politician Kennedy Agyapong maliciously defamed investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

While a jury at the Essex County Superior Court initially awarded Anas $18 million in damages, the presiding judge later reduced the amount to $500, citing the original award as excessive.

In a statement issued through his investigative organization, Tiger Eye PI, Anas emphasized that the true victory lies in the court’s recognition of the defamation, not the monetary compensation.

He pointed out that by filing a motion for remittitur, Mr. Agyapong effectively accepted the jury’s verdict that he had defamed Anas.

Anas welcomed the court’s confirmation that none of Mr. Agyapong’s claims against him were substantiated and reaffirmed his dedication to exposing corruption.

“This fight has never been about money, but about truth and justice,” the statement, dated May 11, 2025, concluded.
