TUC urges Mahama to proceed cautiously with Chief Justice’s removal

Organised Labour has urged President John Dramani Mahama to act with caution and deliberation in the ongoing process concerning the potential removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

During the 2025 May Day parade, the Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Joshua Ansah, cautioned that any hasty actions in removing the Chief Justice could have grave implications for the stability and integrity of Ghana’s democracy.

Chief Justice Torkornoo was recently suspended after a prima facie case was established in response to at least three petitions calling for her removal.

During his address at the May Day parade, Joshua Ansah issued a stern warning, stating:

“Mr. President, Organised Labour is concerned. This matter puts our democracy on a slippery path,” Mr. Ansah said. “We ask you to hasten slowly and proceed cautiously. Your decision will have a big impact on the country.”

He also took the opportunity to criticize the government for its inadequate efforts to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which continues to devastate the environment and communities throughout Ghana.
