May Day: Labour Union in W/R demand PTC interchange completion

The Western Region Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairperson, Shirley Breiman, has called on the government to accelerate the completion of the PTC interchange in Takoradi, citing the region’s poor road network as a significant challenge for workers.
She made the appeal during the May Day celebration. Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson stressed that collaborative efforts among government, employers, organized labor, and civil society are crucial for achieving shared growth, speaking on the occasion.
It was a beautiful scene as workers in the Western Region gathered to celebrate May Day.
TUC Chairperson Shirley Breiman highlighted workers’ challenges, particularly the region’s poor roads, and urged Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson to prioritize completing the PTC interchange (Kwame Nkrumah Roundabout), a key Sinohydro project crucial for the Western Region’s infrastructure.
Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson acknowledged the need for urgent pay and working condition reforms, assuring workers that the government is committed to restoring hope and confidence through job security and improved conditions.

He stressed that achieving common growth requires a collaborative effort, with government striving for fairness and transparency, while employers, organized labor, and civil society also play vital roles.
“Our Galant workers, let me seize this opportunity to assure you that H. E John Mahama is indeed here to restore hope and confidence in the economy for secured jobs and better working conditions.
Our Economic Policy document known by many as the 2024 Manifesto, “Resetting Ghana,” clearly outlines transformative measures aimed at restoring dignity to the Ghanaian worker”. He said.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) and organized labor are pushing for representation in Regional Security Council (RESEC) meetings, according to Richard Hanson, Acting Regional Secretary of TUC Ghana for Western and Western North regions.
The May Day celebration, themed “Resetting Pay and Working Conditions in Ghana: The Role of Stakeholders,” honored outstanding workers from various institutions, highlighting the need for improved labor conditions.
