Ghana’s new chip-embedded passports to be delivered within 15 days – MFA cautions public on proper handling

Ghanaians applying for passports can now expect delivery within 15 working days for ordinary applications and just five days for expedited service under major reforms announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The new chip-embedded passports, officially rolled out today, April 28, 2025 mark the most significant transformation of Ghana’s passport system in history. However, the Ministry has issued a strong caution to the public on proper handling of the new documents, warning that improper care could lead to permanent damage.
“There has been much talk of Chip-Embedded passports since 2010 when ICAO asked countries to prepare to meet its new requirements consistent with ICAO regulations DOC 9303 but this is the first time Ghana is having a mass roll out and it is being done together with our progressive reset reforms as a full package” the Foreign Affairs Minister said.
Handle With Care
The new passports feature a polycarbonate biographical data page embedded with a micro Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip. Holders are advised not to bend the document, expose it to heat or liquids, or store it with other chip-embedded cards, as this may interfere with the encoded information. Attempting to split or tamper with the biographical page will destroy the passport. In the event of accidental damage, the Minister of Foreign Affairs has asked applicants to report to the issuing authority rather than attempting self-repair.
Major Passport Reforms Announced
Speaking at the official roll-out of the chip-embedded passports at the Passport Headoffice in Accra, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, declared the start of a “new era of modernization, convenience, and respect for the Ghanaian citizen.”
Key reforms introduced include. 24-hour operations at the Passport Application Centre Headquarters, Direct passport delivery to homes and offices through Ghana Post and Troskit, at no extra delivery cost and a real-time e-tracking system to monitor passport application progress.
The Ministry said all passport applications and renewals from today will be issued in the chip-embedded format. The older biometric passports remain valid until 2030, in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements.
A Secure, Modern Document
Ghana’s new passports boast more than 100 overt and covert security features, a significant upgrade from the 32 features on the previous biometric passports, making forgery nearly impossible. The use of polycarbonate data pages offers superior protection against common document crimes such as forgeries and unauthorized alterations. The chip securely stores personal data, photograph, and biometric information of the passport holder.
“As Ghana roles out its first Chip-embedded Polycarbonate (PC) biographical data-page passport, equipped with the highest latent and patent security inputs, the sector players, end users and regulators within the document security management setup are assured of robust security features that are almost impossible to forge.” Mr Ablakwa said
“Our new system not only improves security but creates jobs and strengthens national institutions like Ghana Post,” he added.
Application Process and Customer Support
Ghanaians can apply online at www.passport.mfa.gov.gh. Those without a clear address can opt to collect their passports from the nearest Ghana Post office. Ghanaians living abroad will also benefit, with embassies and high commissions ready to issue the new passports.
“We are here to serve you with respect and integrity,” the Foreign Affairs Minister emphasized.
