Court of Appeal to rule on Yaw Asante Agyeman’s 35-year sentence in Ataa Ayi case on June 5
After nearly eight years of legal proceedings, the Court of Appeal has set June 5, 2025, to deliver its judgment in the case of Yaw Asante Agyeman, a former motorbike repairer challenging his 35-year prison sentence over alleged ties to notorious armed robber Ataa Ayi.
Agyeman was convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery after police found his contact on the phones of Ataa Ayi’s gang members.
His lawyer argues that Agyeman merely repaired motorcycles used by the robbers and was wrongfully convicted without legal representation.
The appeal, heard by Justices Janapare, Stephen Oppong, and Aboagye Tandoh, has faced years of delays due to missing court records. The Attorney General’s Department has reportedly filed no objections to the appeal, a move Agyeman’s legal team views as a strong signal in their favor.
If the appeal succeeds, Agyeman could walk free after serving over 20 years in prison for a crime he maintains he did not commit.
