Gold Board CEO announces revocation of LI 2462 upon Parliament’s resumption

Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has announced that Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462 will be revoked when Parliament reconvenes.

In an interview on Channel One TV, Mr. Gyamfi stated that the decision to scrap the law was made by the government, led by President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to him, LI 2462, which empowers the president to grant mining leases in protected forest areas, poses significant environmental risks and must be repealed entirely.

“There were discussions about whether to amend or revoke it, as some were concerned that revocation might leave a legal vacuum. But the consensus is that the law is toxic and must be discarded completely — and the government has taken that stance,” Gyamfi explained.

He added that he had consulted with the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, who confirmed that all necessary preparations for the revocation have been completed. The formal repeal is expected to proceed once Parliament resumes sitting.

Mr. Gyamfi also emphasized that the issue of illegal small-scale mining is a more pressing concern than matters concerning the Gold Board itself. He noted that the government has already begun taking action to combat illegal mining activities, even ahead of the LI’s official withdrawal.
