The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced a nationwide campaign to mark the 2025 African Vaccination Week and Child Health Promotion Week, with a renewed focus on improving child health and expanding access to vital immunization services.
African Vaccination Week is scheduled for the last week of April, with Child Health Promotion Week following in the second week of May. This year’s theme, “Every Child Deserves a Healthy Future; Invest in Your Child. Attend ‘Weighing’ Regularly,” underscores the importance of consistent child welfare clinic visits and access to free healthcare services for children.
In a press release issued on April 24, 2025, the GHS highlighted the life-saving role of vaccinations in preventing serious childhood illnesses and strengthening overall public health.
“While significant strides have been made in immunization coverage, challenges persist in ensuring every child, particularly in underserved areas, has access to vaccines,” the statement read. “These campaigns aim to raise awareness, promote community involvement, and enhance the reach of essential child health interventions.”
During the two-week observance, parents and caregivers are encouraged to bring children under five to the nearest health facility or outreach post for a variety of free services, including:
- Immunization, vitamin A supplementation, and deworming
- Growth monitoring, nutrition assessment, and birth registration
- Distribution and promotion of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs)
- Nutrition counseling
- Health education and promotion
The GHS is calling on healthcare professionals, civil society groups, and local communities to join forces in boosting child health outcomes and increasing vaccine coverage.
By participating in the campaign, Ghanaians can help ensure that every child receives a healthy start in life and is protected against preventable diseases.
