The Center for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy has criticized the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for failing to enforce regulatory compliance among electricity distribution companies, specifically the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO).
According to the Center, persistent system losses by these utilities are a major factor behind under-recoveries in the power sector—an issue that ultimately results in higher tariffs for consumers.
Executive Director Benjamin Nsiah warned that without stronger regulatory enforcement, utility costs will continue to escalate, worsening poverty levels among households already burdened by the high cost of living.
“This is also a lack of responsibility on the part of PURC. They mentioned that they do not charge the end user the whole tariff adjustment because they do, ECG will not be able to mobilise”
