The Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) has strongly opposed the recent utility tariff increases approved by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).
In a statement signed by the Union’s Secretary, Alfa Shaban, GUTA described the hikes as unjustified, attributing the root causes of high operational costs to systemic inefficiencies, corruption, and mismanagement within the utility sector.
The Union argued that the tariff adjustments place an undue burden on both domestic and commercial consumers, while utility providers and the PURC have failed to address critical issues such as waste and financial malpractice.
GUTA is calling on the government to take decisive action against corruption, including the recovery of stolen state assets and reforms aimed at enhancing utility sector management.
The Association emphasized that Ghana has strong economic growth potential, which can be fully realized through prudent and transparent management of national resources.
