ASEC calls for shift to state-led energy generation

The Africa Sustainable Energy Center (ASEC) is urging governments to reduce their dependence on Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and focus on expanding state-owned generation plants to ensure that the country controls around 80% of its energy generation capacity.
ASEC’s Executive Director, Justice Ohene Akoto, emphasized that energy security should be managed by the state rather than private companies.
He also called for a reassessment and renegotiation of existing power purchase agreements with IPPs.
“This is a clarion call to us as Ghanaians and then to the country. We need to invest in government-owned generation systems. Clearly, as we are talking, the IPPs are very important. 45 is a huge number, a chunk of our generation system that we have to pay attention to and find a way to engage with.”
