Minister John Jinapor slashes ECG budget by 50% to address debt and missing containers

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has announced a reduction in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) budget from GH₵500 million to GH₵250 million following reports of missing containers at the port.
This move is intended to help address outstanding debts owed to power producers.
Jinapor revealed that ECG was originally allocated GH₵935 million for planned procurement in 2023. However, the company overspent by a significant GH₵7.3 billion, largely due to excessive cable purchases.
The financial strain caused by this overspending has led to revenue shortfalls and, as a result, missing containers at the port due to unpaid clearance fees.
While speaking in Parliament, Jinapor reassured lawmakers that measures are being put in place to prevent further financial mismanagement and to ensure ECG’s continued operation.
“We have reduced their budget from GH₵500 million to GH₵250 million. Because we must pay the power producers. Today, the bill is over GH₵80 billion in the energy sector. If we don’t do something, this sector will collapse. As a minister, I am determined to do my bid no matter how difficult it is,” he said.
