Western Regional Minister inaugurates Markets Fire Prevention Committee to ensure fire free incidents

The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson has inaugurated a 10-member Fire Prevention Committee to ensure the region remains fire-free this year.

The committee, chaired by Western Regional Fire Commander Mr. D.A. Darko, includes representatives from the market Women Association, Ghana Journalist Association, STMA, EKMA, and NADMO was inaugurated on Thursday, March 27, 2025 at the Western Regional Coordinating Council in Sekondi.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Regional Minister emphasized the importance of the committee’s work, urging them to develop a proactive strategies to prevent fires in the major and smaller markets in the region.

He noted that fire outbreaks have severe consequences, including significant financial losses and discomfort for market participants, particularly women.

Addressing the committee, Mr. Nelson stated that the committee is set up to come out with how fires especially at the markets can be prevented.

He indicated that the purpose of the formation of the committee is to bring awareness to the various markets in the region whether big or small.

He said for now, because time is not on the committee’s side, the focus should be on the major markets within the metropolis and beyond.

The Minister added that any out break of fire comes with a huge cost to the country, and participants in the market, stressing that he would not want an incident like that in the Western Region.

He said, of the key things the committee should be doing as part of their work is to access the fire safety standards in the various markets to see how all measures will be put in place to prevent any fire out break.

He admonished the committee to take lessons from recent fire outbreaks in other regions and learn from what may have caused those fires and put down a working plan for it not to happen in the region.

He also charged the chairman of the committee, Mr. D.A. Darko who is the Western Regional Fire Commander to bring his experience as a fire officer to bear.

On behalf of the committee, the chairman Mr. D.A. Darkoh thanked the Regional Minister for the trust imposed in them and assure him that the committee will leave up to his expectation.
