IGP revives Police Public Affairs Department for improved communication

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Youhuno, has reactivated the Public Affairs Department of the Ghana Police Service to enhance effective communication with the public.

Speaking at a three-day training course for all Regional Public Affairs Units of the Ghana Police Service, the IGP emphasized that the initiative aims to strengthen these branches of the service.

He noted that providing timely and accurate information to the public is crucial for building trust and maintaining the high professional standards of the Police Service.

The IGP also reminded participants that their interactions with the media must always adhere to the core values and ethical standards upheld by the Ghana Police Service.

“This important three-day workshop for regional and unit public affairs officers from across the country represents a positive step in our collective efforts to revamp and strengthen the public affairs of the Ghana police service.

As we respond to the demands of the citizenry and public expectations, our communication outfit must remain robust, transparent, and effective. The Ghana Police Service, like any law enforcement institution worldwide, has undergone significant transformations to adapt to the political, social, and cultural dynamics of society. Policing is integral to maintaining order in any civilized society.”

“Ensuring crime prevention, investigation, apprehension of offenders, and the administration of justice. These core responsibilities are driven by the need to oppose societal norms and values. As our communities evolve, so must our approaches to law enforcement, ensuring we are always responsive to maintain peace, security, and order.”

In response to this decision, the General Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Kofi Yeboah, welcomed the IGP’s move to reactivate the Public Affairs Department. Mr. Yeboah expressed optimism that this development would ensure the timely dissemination of information, which would help reduce speculation and misinformation.

However, he also urged the Police Service to adequately resource its staff in the Public Affairs Department to ensure they can effectively carry out their duties. Additionally, Mr. Yeboah called on the media to refrain from abusing the information provided by the service.
