Ministry revokes mining licenses post-December 2024 to combat illegal mining

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has revoked all mining licenses issued after December 7, 2024, as part of efforts to combat illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.
This action aims to mitigate the environmental damage caused by unauthorized mining, particularly in forest reserves and water bodies.
At a press briefing on sector policies and initiatives, Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah announced that seven out of nine forest reserves affected by illegal mining have already been successfully restored.
He added that the decision was made in response to recommendations from key regulatory bodies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Minerals Commission, the Forestry Commission, and the Water Resources Commission.
“Following careful assessment, we are proceeding with the revocation of all small-scale mining licences issued from December 7. These licences were granted in haste, without due process,” he said.
Mr. Buah further stated that those affected could appeal the decision to ensure the correct procedures are followed.
