Tax Lawyer welcomes E-Levy removal, criticizes betting tax repeal

Taxation - Traction School of Governance and Business

Tax lawyer Francis Tima Boye has praised the removal of the E-Levy, calling it a positive step for businesses and financial inclusion.

He pointed out that the 1% charge on electronic transactions added unnecessary costs for businesses.

Regarding the betting tax, Mr. Tima Boye acknowledged the social and religious concerns surrounding it but highlighted its important role in revenue generation. He suggested that its removal appeared to be politically motivated.

” The e-levy is a positive action. It is going to expand the financial inclusion agenda that we have been pursuing over the years. Regarding the betting tax, the youth are happy even though in terms of social and religious people have spoken against it. Personally, I think we could have maintained it, so that at least if we are getting 78 million cedis a year from road tolls, and betting alone is giving us close to 157 million, one could have on a social or religious basis say that, let’s maintain the betting tax, but I think that since it was a campaign promise, they will fulfil it, “
