Defence Minister, Dr. Omane Boamah, has warned individuals and groups involved in illegal mining in forest reserves to cease their activities, stating that the government will no longer tolerate such practices.

He also urged all illegal miners operating in forest reserves and water belts to immediately remove their equipment from these prohibited areas.

The unchecked activities of illegal miners, or galamsey operators, have resulted in widespread deforestation, the destruction of farmlands, and severe pollution of key rivers and water bodies, including the Pra, Ankobra, and Offin Rivers.

Galamsey has been a persistent issue in Ghana, with successive governments struggling to mitigate its harmful effects despite numerous attempts at intervention.

In many regions, entire ecosystems have been destroyed, leaving once-productive agricultural lands barren, while communities face water shortages due to contamination from toxic chemicals like mercury and cyanide.

Dr. Omane Boamah issued this warning via his official Facebook page, emphasizing that anyone wishing to engage in mining activities must adhere to the proper legal procedures.

“In the name of God and Ghana, stay away from the forest reserves and galamsey! A word to the wise is enough!” he retorted.
