Executive Director of VAST Ghana, commends government’s commitment to addressing non-communicable diseases

Labram Musah, the Executive Director of Vision Accelerated Sustainable Development, VAST Ghana, has commended the government for prioritising the health needs of Ghanaians by looking forward to establishing the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.

President John Mahama, presenting the State of the Nation Address, mentioned setting up the Fund to care for the health matters of Ghanaians

The fund seeks to provide financial support to individuals suffering from chronic health conditions, including kidney and liver diseases, high blood pressure, and non-communicable diseases.

In an interview on Spice FM, Mr Musah said the initiative is crucial as over 41 million annual deaths globally are attributable to non-communicable diseases, while in Ghana non-communicable diseases account for 43 per cent of all deaths.

He said the commitment to alleviate the catastrophic out-of-pocket payments experienced by persons with lived experience of non-communicable diseases will be a big relief.

Furthermore, the explicit mention of non-communicable disease aligns with Ghana’s commitments to the global NCD agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3.4.
