Tax awareness in informal sector a concern, says Chartered Institute of Taxation President

George Kwatia, President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation Ghana and the West African Union of Tax Institutes, has expressed concern over the low level of tax awareness among citizens in Ghana and the wider sub-region.

He pointed out that many workers in the informal sector, including hairdressers and small business owners, operate without understanding their tax obligations.

Mr. Kwatia called for economic reforms, proposing that tax education be incorporated into vocational training programs to ensure that individuals entering the workforce are aware of their tax responsibilities.

He emphasized that without proper data and awareness, the informal sector will continue to remain largely untapped for revenue, which will hinder national development.
