President Mahama pledges to enhance Free SHS program, rejects cancellation claims

President Dr. John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, stressing that it will not be canceled but rather improved for better efficiency and impact.
Speaking during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, February 27, 2025, President Mahama underscored the program’s importance in expanding access to education and assured Ghanaians of his determination to enhance its implementation.
“I, John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, will not cancel the Free SHS program,” he asserted. “I am committed to improving it to make it better.”
The Free SHS initiative, which was introduced to provide secondary education to all Ghanaian students regardless of their financial background, has received both praise and criticism over the years.
President Mahama took the opportunity to clarify the program’s impact, revealing that approximately 3.4 million students have benefited since its inception.
In response to claims from the previous administration that 5.1 million students had been reached, he dismissed this figure as “an exaggerated and false narrative aimed at gaining political credit.”
His remarks reflect his government’s commitment to strengthening the Free SHS program, addressing its challenges, and ensuring that every Ghanaian child has access to quality education. President Mahama assured the nation that his administration is focused on making Free SHS more effective, sustainable, and beneficial for future generations.
