The Western Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalist Association, GJA has expressed its unwavering support for three journalists who were reporting on illegal mining in the Breman Adomanya forest in the Wassa Amenfi West district.
The incident which took place on February 21, 2025, led to a violent attack on the journalist whilst they were investigating the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining.
In a statement signed by the President of the Association, Desmond Cudjoe, he condemned the brutal assault on the reporters, Citi News Akwasi Agyei, Henry Emil Flynn of Angel FM and Jacob Adu-Baah of ABC News GH and Rok FM.

The GJA emphasised that these acts of violence against media professionals are not just an assault on press freedom but also a direct threat to the country’s democracy as well as environmental sustainability.
“Such attacks must not be tolerated as they undermine the very pillars that uphold a free and democratic society,” the statement said.
The GJA commended Akwasi Agyei, Henry Emil Fynn, and Jacob Adu-Baah for their extraordinary bravery and commitment to ethical journalism.
“Their dedication serves as a reminder of the critical role the media plays in holding power to account and safeguarding the public interest,” the GJA added.
The association called for swift action by the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and to take stronger measures to combat the rampant illegal mining activities that continue to devastate communities, ecosystems, and livelihoods.
“We must act decisively to end the galamsey menace and protect both our environment and the safety of journalists who expose the truth,” the GJA urged.
Additionally, the GJA called on the government to prioritize the safety of journalists, ensuring they have the freedom and protection to report on issues of national importance without fear of intimidation or violence. “Silence in the face of such attacks emboldens perpetrators and erodes the foundations of our democracy,” the statement noted.
The GJA reiterated its commitment to defending press freedom and supporting journalists who continue to speak truth to power. The association also urged media stakeholders and civil society groups to unite in condemning violence against journalists and to demand immediate action to address the ongoing galamsey crisis.
