“Journalism has gone to the dogs” – Kwesimintsim MP reacts to sunglasses reportage

Kwesimintsim Member of Parliament (MP), Philip Fiifi Buckman, has expressed disappointment over media reportage that centered on his designer sunglasses rather than the critical discussions held in Parliament.
Speaking at the Western Region Development Dialogue on Monday, February 24, 2025, in Takoradi, the legislator criticized the media for prioritizing trivial issues over important national matters.
“That day, we discussed about social justice -how to fight discrimination. But lo and behold, my designer spectacle which is a medicated one that was mentioned took the centre stage. We discussed important matters but they weren’t captured. I was so sad in the evening that journalism has gone down to the dogs. We have something to do [responsibility] as a media” Buckman lamented.
His reaction follows an incident in Parliament where Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin publicly reprimanded him for wearing sunglasses in the chamber, describing it as “disruptive conduct.”
“You don’t wear sunglasses in the chamber,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
The Kwesimintsim MP’s remarks have since sparked debate over media priorities and the need for a shift towards more substantive parliamentary reportage.
