Domelevo accuses Judiciary of failing to comply with asset declaration laws

Former Auditor General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo, has accused members of the judiciary of failing to adhere to asset declaration laws, calling it a violation of the Constitution.

In an interview on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, he expressed disappointment over the widespread disregard for these laws by public officials.

Mr. Domelevo emphasized that many officials misuse public funds for personal benefit and stressed the importance of asset declarations in ensuring accountability. He pointed to Auditor General’s reports that reveal the misappropriation of public funds.

Sharing his experience with enforcing asset declaration laws, Mr. Domelevo revealed that even high-ranking judges, including former Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah, had failed to declare their assets. “It was clear that even the judiciary, which should lead in upholding the law, didn’t declare,” he remarked.

He also criticized oversight bodies such as the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for not taking action against non-compliant officials.

According to him, CHRAJ dismissed complaints, claiming there were no legal penalties for failing to declare assets.

Mr. Domelevo questioned why officials are allowed to assume office without fulfilling constitutional requirements, comparing it to a president refusing to take the oath of office. He emphasized that asset declaration should not be overlooked and called for stronger enforcement and penalties to ensure transparency in governance.
