Referring to Ken Ofori-Atta as a fugitive could harm Ghana’s international reputation – Nana Karikari

Nana Karikari, a Senior International Affairs and Political Analyst based in Atlanta, Georgia, has expressed concern that the reputation of the country could suffer internationally following the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) description of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a “fugitive from justice.”

She urged the media to approach the matter carefully, warning that overly sensational coverage could undermine the ongoing investigation. Karikari noted that the OSP may have gathered its own evidence and witness testimony that led to the characterization of Ofori-Atta as a fugitive.

‘’The USA is interested in this because Ofori-Atta is seeking medical counsel in the States,’’ she said.

Karikari also said that the United States could raise concerns about human rights and suggest that he may not face trial, especially if the media and government statements, including those from Ofori Atta’s defense team, influence the case.

The political analyst highlighted that the case has attracted international attention and stressed that it would reflect poorly on Ghana if it appears to be politically motivated. She also suggested that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) could work with Interpol to bring Ofori Atta back to Ghana.

The OSP declared Ken Ofori-Atta, former Finance Minister, a fugitive after he failed to attend questioning in a corruption investigation. Ofori-Atta left Ghana on January 2, 2025, and was later notified by the OSP that he was a suspect in four corruption-related cases.
