Karpowership Plant threatens to halt power supply over unpaid debt

The operators of the Karpowership Plant in Aboadze, Western Region, have informed the government that they will be unable to continue supplying power unless the outstanding debt to the company is settled promptly.

This announcement was made during a meeting between the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Mr. John Jinapor, and officials from the Karpowership barge at the Ministry.

The Electricity Company of Ghana currently owes the company an overwhelming $379 million.

In response, Mr. Jinapor urged the plant operators to show patience as the new administration works on finding alternative solutions to settle the outstanding bills.

Ghana’s energy sector is grappling with a severe crisis, with its debt reaching over $3 billion as of January 12, 2025.

The IMF has issued several warnings, stressing that the government must implement significant reforms to prevent the sector from collapsing.
