Ofori-Atta’s lawyers explain absence from OSP hearing, cite ongoing medical treatment

The legal team of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has provided an explanation for his absence from an appearance before the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on February 10, 2025.

They clarified that Mr. Ofori-Atta is currently abroad for medical treatment.

In a letter dated January 31, 2025, the lawyers stated that Mr. Ofori-Atta was unaware of the OSP’s initial request on January 24, as the letter had been left at his security post while he was away. They also noted that he had informed both the former and current Chief of Staff about his medical trip in early January.

The lawyers further explained that Mr. Ofori-Atta is still undergoing medical tests, and his treatment plan is yet to be finalized. As a result, they have requested that the OSP reschedule his appearance for when he returns to Ghana. They also expressed their readiness to provide any relevant information to assist with the investigation.

This statement follows the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng’s declaration on February 12, 2025, that Mr. Ofori-Atta is considered a fugitive.

The OSP is investigating him for alleged financial mismanagement, including transactions involving Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited, the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Electricity Company of Ghana, Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC), the National Cathedral project, and the Ministry of Health’s ambulance procurement.

There were also reports of a raid on Mr. Ofori-Atta’s residence in Accra, but the Special Prosecutor has denied any involvement in the alleged operation.
