The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has once again urged its customers to refrain from tampering with electricity meters.
The company emphasized that illegal connections are negatively impacting its revenue and compromising the quality of electricity service in its areas of operation.
David Boadi Asamoah, the Acting Managing Director of ECG, highlighted that meter tampering is a significant concern for the company. In response, ECG is rolling out smart intelligent meters that transmit alerts to the monitoring control room whenever there is any interference from customers or unauthorized electricians.
Mr. Asamoah called on customers to avoid illegal power connections, stressing that doing so will help the company collect essential revenue, which is crucial for improving service delivery.
“The meter that we are installing are smart prepaid meters. When we talk about smart meter, we are talking about a meter that has both communication and then it has also tamper alerts. For example, if you open the front side of the meter, we call it the terminal, the meter sends a signal to our meter control center,” he said.
“So whatever happens in your home, at the end of the day, as far as the meter, it doesn’t take a picture of your home. It only relays information about the metering and what is happening to our insulation back to us. Us. Then we do further investigation. And if we need to come to your home, we come to do the confirmation there.
Mr. Asamoah Boadi added, “The meters that we have there are smart, and they give us information about whatever you are doing to that meter in the house. So based on that, we follow through, and then we do our investigation. And if we find you to be culpable, then we deal with it.”
