Kwakye Ofosu backs AG’s move to drop court cases, citing political motivation

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State for Government Communication, has supported the Attorney General’s decision to drop certain court cases, stating they were politically motivated and a misuse of public resources.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight, Kwakye Ofosu argued that the prosecutions lacked solid evidence and were primarily aimed at political opponents.

He also raised concerns about the fairness of prosecuting individuals like Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, while those responsible for the violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election were not held accountable.

He stated, “A clear distinction must be made between frivolous, malicious persecution and evidence-based prosecution.”

He emphasized that the government should refrain from wasting time and resources on cases meant to silence critics. The decision has drawn criticism, including from investigative journalist Manasseh Azure, who cautioned that halting prosecutions creates a “dangerous precedent” and weakens efforts in the fight against corruption.

Azure remarked, “For a president promising to reset Ghana and prosecute government officials involved in stealing or enabling the theft of public funds, this mass clearance is the wrong way to begin. It sets a dangerous precedent.”

Kwakye Ofosu assured the public that the Attorney General would offer a comprehensive explanation for the discontinued cases at a press conference, stressing the government’s commitment to fairness and justice.
