Ghana’s first female commodore encourages young women to pursue careers in security forces

A piece of advice has been given to young women who desire to enter into security forces to take up the challenges that come with it to excel.

According to Commodore Faustina Boakyewaa Anokye, a woman can take up any appointment in the security forces once she puts her mind to it, as it’s a determination and mindset.

Being the first female to join the Ghana Navy, she indicated that, unlike in the past, not many women were schooling as it’s happening now due to the nation’s commitment to gender mainstreaming. One can see women excelling in other areas of endeavour, including in the Ghana Navy.

She emphasized: that once you have what it takes to do it, the sky is the limit. There’s no door for a man or a woman; now it’s a mindset and then putting yourself forward.

The Deputy Chief Staff Officer of “Policy and Plans” at the Ghana Navy, Commodore Anokye, noted that young women shouldn’t be afraid but rather come with determination, as they will be well welcomed to wear the uniform and assigned subsequent ranks once they qualify.

Commodore Faustina Boakyewaa Anokye, having spent almost 29 years in the Ghana Navy and still in active service, encouraged the young women and emphasized there’s no discrimination so far as recruitment or enlistment is concerned, only if one is qualified to be in the security forces.

She made this known to the media when one of the industrious female officers, Commander Sabina Dennison, was inducted to head the Ghana Navy Supply Base in Takoradi as the commanding officer.
