Ghana ranks 8th in Africa for internet quality

Ghana has been ranked 8th in Africa for internet quality in the 2024 Surfshark Digital Quality of Life Index (DQL), earning an index score of 0.304.

This score reflects the country’s performance in internet speed, stability, and overall digital connectivity.

Mauritius leads the African rankings with a score of 0.361, followed by Ivory Coast in 2nd, Egypt in 3rd, and Algeria in 4th. South Africa, Senegal, and Burkina Faso occupy the 5th, 6th, and 7th spots, respectively. Morocco and Nigeria complete the top 10, ranking 9th and 10th.

The report notes that while digital connectivity in Africa has improved, issues such as slow internet speeds, high data costs, and unreliable network coverage still pose barriers to accessing vital online services like e-commerce, telemedicine, and digital banking.

The 2024 Surfshark DQL Index evaluated 121 countries across five key pillars: internet affordability, internet quality, e-infrastructure, e-security, and e-government. These factors were further examined through 14 indicators to gauge each country’s overall digital well-being.

Despite progress, African nations still trail in global digital rankings, particularly in internet quality. The highest-ranked African country came in 66th globally, while European countries claimed the top 10 spots. Only 18 countries outside Europe made it into the top 50.

As digital transformation rapidly advances globally, the report highlights the urgent need for African governments to improve internet accessibility and affordability to close the digital divide.
