WAEC to release withheld 2024 WASSCE results on February 28, 2025, amidst ongoing legal challenges

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that the withheld results from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will be released on February 28, 2025.

Mr. John K. Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, explained that the decision follows hearings held for the affected candidates, ensuring that only those with valid results are cleared for release. He reassured the public of the council’s commitment to fairness and maintaining the integrity of its examinations.

WAEC also expressed concern over the increasing incidents of examination malpractice and called for collective action from parents, guardians, the media, and other stakeholders to address the issue.

As part of its disciplinary actions, WAEC canceled the results of 4,108 candidates for bringing unauthorized materials into exam halls, and 483 candidates had their entire results withheld for possessing mobile phones.

Additionally, subject results for 781 candidates and entire results for 209 candidates were withheld due to suspected infractions, while results from 319 schools were withheld over alleged collusion.

WAEC follows a thorough process when handling withheld results, including contacting the affected schools, reviewing exam scripts, and providing candidates with the chance to respond to allegations. Final decisions will be made based on these investigations.

In some cases, candidates challenged the withholding of their results in court, leading to a ruling that ordered WAEC to release them. However, the examination body has appealed the decision, with the case scheduled for hearing on February 20, 2025.

WAEC has urged affected candidates and their guardians to cooperate with the council to ensure the swift release of results.
