The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the University of Ghana to implement a 25 percent reduction in residential facility fees for both new and returning students.
This decision was announced during a meeting on February 6, 2025, with the University’s management, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo and representatives from the Student Representative Council (SRC), at the Ministry in Accra.
“I have instructed the Vice Chancellor to implement a 25 percent reduction in residential facility fees,” Minister Iddrisu stated. “Additionally, I have advised her to involve the SRC in discussions regarding any future fee adjustments.”
In response, Prof. Nana Aba Amfo assured the Minister of the University’s commitment to the directive.
“We have heard the concerns of our Minister and our students. We are in a position to implement the 25 percent reduction across the board. Moving forward, we will ensure better student engagement,” she affirmed.
SRC President Maradona Adjei Yeboah expressed appreciation for the reduction but also advocated for refunds to students who had already paid the higher fees.
“We are grateful for this relief, as it eases the financial burden on our parents. However, there should be a refund for those who have already made payments,” he emphasized.
University management revealed that approximately 80 percent of students had already settled their residential facility fees before the announcement.
