A shooting at an education centre in central Sweden has left 10 people dead, including the suspected gunman.

The attack occurred on Tuesday at Risbergska school in Orebro, located 200km (124 miles) from Stockholm.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called it “the worst mass shooting in Swedish history,” and described the tragedy as overwhelming.

Police confirmed the suspect, believed to have acted alone, is dead, but the motive remains unclear. Authorities have ruled out any “ideological” reasons for the attack.

The shooting took place at 12:33 local time, with several people injured. Police had earlier warned that the death toll might rise, as many were in critical condition.

The school, which caters to adults who have not completed their primary or secondary education, was placed on lockdown. Students from nearby schools were also kept indoors for safety.

Sweden’s justice minister, Gunnar Strommer, expressed condolences, calling the event a “tragedy,” and assured the public that schools would be safe to return to the next day.

Orebro’s hospitals cleared emergency rooms and intensive care units in preparation for incoming victims, with five gunshot victims treated at the University Hospital.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos. Teacher Lena Warenmark recalled hearing about 10 gunshots, while student Marwa recounted attempting to help an injured person who had been shot in the shoulder. “Everyone was so shocked,” she said.

Prime Minister Kristersson shared his thoughts on the painful day, expressing sympathy for those whose “normal school day” was replaced by terror.

He emphasized that no further threats existed and urged the public to allow police to carry out their investigation.
