Drivers Union defies Gov’t 25% transport fare hike stay, threaten protest

Western Regional Chairman of the Concerned Drivers Union, Kofi Boafo, says they disagree with calls by the government to rescind the decision to increase transport fares by 25 per cent.

Speaking on Spice FM this morning, Mr. Boafo said their businesses are on the verge of collapse given the hikes in essential operational requirements, including fuel, spare parts, lubricants, and most recently, insurance premiums.

“This demand is necessitated by the continuous rise in the cost of essential operational requirements, including fuel, spare parts, lubricants, and most recently, insurance premiums.

These price hikes have placed an unbearable financial burden on drivers, making it increasingly difficult to sustain our operations and provide quality transport services to the public,” he said.

He reckoned that they would meet with the executives of their mother association (GPRTU) to conclude the way forward.

“We, therefore, urge our national executives and the leadership of GPRTU to engage with the relevant authorities to ensure a fair and timely adjustment of transport fares.”

Mr. Boafo, however, threatened that they would stage a protest should the government disagree with their decision.

“We give our leaders up to Sunday to consider this proposal of ours or else we will go on a protest.”
