Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe appointed new CEO of NHIA

Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, a seasoned physician and public health expert, has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), taking over from Dr. Da Costa Aboagye.

Before his appointment, Dr. Bampoe served as the Deputy Minister of Health and has held various leadership roles in international health organizations.

In his first address to the NHIA management and staff at the handing-over ceremony at the NHIA headquarters in Accra, Dr. Bampoe expressed his commitment to strengthening Ghana’s health insurance framework, aiming for a more resilient and accessible system.

The experienced physician and public health professional emphasized his dedication to improving Ghana’s healthcare system, aligning with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) health manifesto, which focuses on universal health coverage, better healthcare financing, and a sustainable National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Dr. Bampoe highlighted the urgent need to remove the cap on the NHIS levy to improve healthcare access and the quality of service for all citizens.

He plans to implement strategies to expand NHIS coverage, particularly for vulnerable populations, in line with the NDC’s 2024 health agenda. He views this as a valuable opportunity to innovate and optimize the use of available resources.

Additionally, Dr. Bampoe thanked the outgoing CEO for his contributions and achievements before embarking on a brief tour of the NHIA.

His appointment comes at a pivotal time as the NHIA works to enhance its services and expand coverage under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Dr. Bampoe, an alumnus of Achimota School, earned his medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School and a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in the United States.

Dr. Bampoe has extensive experience in both national and international healthcare settings. He served as a Senior Fund Portfolio Manager at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria in Geneva, Switzerland. In June 2014, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Health under the Mahama administration, where he played a key role in enhancing Ghana’s healthcare policies and improving access to health services.

Prior to this, he worked with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), representing countries such as Nigeria and Kenya. During his tenure, he served as the UNAIDS Country Director and Representative to UNEP and UN-Habitat.
