Minority calls for removal of Dafeamekpor as Majority Chief Whip over alleged disruptive conduct

The Minority in Parliament is demanding the removal of Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor from his role as Majority Chief Whip, citing concerns over his leadership approach and alleged disruptive behavior.

At a press conference on Friday, January 31, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin criticized Dafeamekpor’s leadership style, describing him as a bully who undermines Parliamentary proceedings and the authority of Bernard Ahiafor, Chairman of the Appointments Committee.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin accused Dafeamekpor of frequently shouting, interrupting sessions, and disregarding the leadership of his own Majority side. He asserted that his actions have created disharmony within the Chamber, affecting the smooth conduct of legislative business.

The Minority Leader called on President John Dramani Mahama and his administration to reconsider their appointment of Dafeamekpor as Majority Chief Whip, arguing that the position requires diplomacy and negotiation skills rather than confrontation.

“To my respected friend Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor if he thinks that he is still in opposition and he would be a bully, then he will meet his meter. Dafeamekpor has gained notoriety of shouting, yelling, undermining his own chairman, interrupting proceedings, undermining his own Majority Leader and he describes himself as the avant-garde of the government.

“Is he the first Majority Chief Whip? The Majority Chief’s role is to be a key negotiator, he should be a diplomat in the Chamber. If he did so successfully in opposition, now he is in government. So President Mahama and his government may have to rethink their choice of Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor as their Majority Chief Whip.”

The call for Dafeamekpor’s removal has intensified debates on Parliamentary leadership and the effectiveness of his role in maintaining order within the Majority Caucus.
