Dr. Ernest Addison bows out as BoG Governor after two terms; Dr. Asiamah set to take over

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, will begin his terminal leave on Monday, February 3, 2025, as he prepares for retirement.

His official exit is set for March 28, 2025, marking the end of his two-term tenure as the head of Ghana’s central bank.

Dr. Addison’s leave, which aligns with the provisions of the Bank of Ghana Act, 2002 (Act 612), as amended, has been approved by President John Dramani Mahama. The law stipulates that a Governor can serve a four-year term, renewable only once.

Having first assumed office on April 3, 2017, Dr. Addison was reappointed for a second term on March 29, 2021. In a statement, the Bank of Ghana expressed gratitude for his dedicated service, wishing him a peaceful retirement.

New Governor Nominated

As Dr. Addison prepares to leave office, President Mahama has nominated Dr. Johnson Asiamah as the successor of Dr. Ernest Addison, pending approval by the Council of State.

Dr. Asiamah, who previously served as the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana from 2016 to 2017, brings extensive expertise in monetary policy, financial regulation, and economic research.

With over 23 years of experience at the central bank, Dr. Asiamah holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton, UK. He has been instrumental in shaping Ghana’s monetary and exchange rate policies while promoting financial stability and economic growth.

His nomination signals continuity in leadership at the central bank, as Ghana navigates its economic and financial landscape.
