The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has issued a stern directive, mandating an immediate halt to all illegal mining activities, both small and large-scale.
The EPA expressed deep concern over the escalating damage to water bodies caused by unlawful mining operations, warning that such practices pose significant risks to the environment, public health, and Ghana’s natural resources.
In a statement released on January 28, 2025, the agency reiterated that all mining activities must comply with Ghana’s environmental laws, which require proper permits and the adoption of sustainable practices to minimize environmental harm.
Referring to Sections 2 and 3b(ii) of the Environmental Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1124), the EPA stressed the urgency of stopping unauthorized mining in water bodies immediately.
To ensure compliance with this directive, the EPA is collaborating with the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST), the Minerals Commission, the Water Resources Commission, and security agencies. Key enforcement measures include:
- Seize equipment used in illegal mining operations in line with applicable laws.
- Intensify surveillance and inspections of mining sites.
- Prosecute individuals and organizations found violating environmental laws.
The EPA is calling on the public to stay alert and report any illegal mining activities through its official hotlines: 0506699466 or 0506694760. The agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s water bodies and emphasized the importance of reporting such activities.
