Dr. Omane Boamah advocates holistic strategy to combat galamsey

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister-designate for Defence, has called for a more comprehensive approach to addressing illegal mining, or galamsey, in Ghana.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee on January 28, 2025, Dr. Boamah emphasized that relying solely on military interventions would not offer a lasting solution to the problem.

Illegal mining has severely impacted the environment, causing river pollution and land degradation. However, Dr. Boamah suggested a strategy that involves community involvement, alternative livelihood programs, and the use of modern technology.

He pointed out that providing better job opportunities would reduce the number of people engaging in galamsey, which in turn would make it easier for law enforcement to handle the issue.

“The fight against galamsey should not be centered solely on the military. We need to engage communities, educate them about alternative livelihoods, and incorporate technology alongside military efforts,” Dr. Boamah stated.

This approach moves beyond a military-focused response and advocates for collaboration with various stakeholders. Dr. Boamah believes that this well-rounded strategy will offer sustainable solutions to illegal mining in Ghana.
