Speaker of Parliament calls for passage of anti-LGBTQ
The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has revealed his intention to consult with the newly appointed Attorney General and Minister for Justice regarding the contentious Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.
He made this announcement while addressing the Ghanaian community in Côte d’Ivoire on January 26, 2025.
Bagbin also criticized former President Nana Akufo-Addo for failing to sign the bill into law after Parliament had passed it, labeling the decision as unconstitutional. He emphasized that it is Parliament, not the president, that holds the authority to pass laws.
“The LGBTQ bill was passed by Parliament, but the former president refused to sign it, which was unconstitutional. Parliament makes laws—not the president. That decision was wrong, and you all punished him for that,” Bagbin said.
The Speaker reiterated his dedication to ensuring the bill becomes law this year, stressing its significance. “I will reach out to the new Attorney General for his input, so we can forward the bill to the new president for approval. This will happen quickly—it will be passed this year. This is about our values and beliefs, and I’m prepared to risk my life for this cause,” he stated.
The Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill has sparked significant debate, attracting both local and international scrutiny.
