NPP withdraws from Media General platforms over ‘biased treatments’
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its withdrawal from all Media General platforms with immediate effect.
According to a press statement dated January 26, 2025 and signed by the party’s Director of Communication, Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP leadership have arrived at the decision due to biased and unprofessional treatments meted out to them by the media house.
“We announce that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) withdraws from all Media General platforms. This decision comes after months of engagement with the production team, hosts, and management of Media General to address concerns regarding unprofessional, biased, and abusive moderation by its hosts.
“Despite repeated assurances since 2023, the observed misconduct and unfairness persist. Though withdrawal is not our preferred resort, we have been forced by the stance of the management of the media house to proceed in this direction,” the press statement read.
The statement cited specific instances where inflammatory remarks were made against former president Nana Akufo-Addo on Media General platforms but the management ignored after several complaints from the NPP.
” For instance, a regular guest known for making inflammatory remarks recently directed another insult towards former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on a programme hosted by Madam Keminni Amanor.
“Strangely, the host did not act to correct or object to this misconduct but merely laughed it off. The said remarks about the former president were unnecessary and in poor taste by any stretch of the imagination, yet the host condoned it,” Richard Ahiagbah stated in the release.
“We are left confused about Media General’s endgame. Also, the TV3 political shows are characterized by biased paneling, where they assemble three(3) or four(4) persons whose political affiliation and orientation are publicly known to favor one party against a single representative from the NPP.
“We just need to tick a box, and there is no genuine desire to hear the other side. Notwithstanding, we hope they will shed their current activist stance and work towards becoming a balanced platform that serves the information needs of Ghanaians rather than seeking to instruct Ghanaians on what to think and schemes to harass the NPP,” the press release concluded.
