The 2024 running mate to Hassan Ayariga, Rev. Dr. Samuel Worlanyo Mensah, says the 7- member committee set up by President John Mahama is unnecessary even though they possess strong credentials.
According to Rev.Dr. Samuel Mensah, the committee’s duty is a duplicate of the National Development Planning Commission, NDPC, and the Economic Management Team, EMT.
He said it would only create a conflict of interest between members and pressure the national purse.
“You can clearly see that that this committee that has been set up, members of this committee are very powerful. They are very good, very solid team. If you look at their credentials, their capacities, their competence, their care, it’s very powerful for national development. But I think this committee that has been set up is unnecessary. The responsibility that have been assigned by this committee is simply the work of the economy management team.
And also the work of the board members of the National Development Planning Commission. Why do we set up this committee to duplicate their activities? It will create conflict of interest. So at the end of the day, people are going to be crushing each other because it’s definitely going to increase national purse. We are already crying that there is no money in the coffers.
We need to generate more money to govern this country. We are now saying that we want to abolish nuisance taxes that are generating some amount of money for us. If we are going to cancel all, but we are now setting up new bureaucracies. “
Dr. Worlanyo Mensah, accessing the committee’s role, noted that the committee should be incorporated into the National Development Planning Commission to be accountable to citizens and not the President.
He called for a dissolution of the committee, saying that another committee.
He was speaking to Spice FM in an interview.
” Why won’t he form the board of the national development planning commission with these members that he set as committee? Why is he setting up a different organ? That is my problem. Nonetheless, if you look at NDC manifesto, NDC appointed technocrats for every field.
This is health, trade and industry, business development, law and development, peace and development; the NDC’s manifesto. That is how it’s not being spearheaded by 1 or 2 persons that has started to develop it for them. So are they saying that they have not known the economy of Ghana? We just finished the elections just a month ago. Are they saying that we don’t really do a thorough assessment of Ghana’s economy?
Vis a vis the manifesto that they had drawn. The manifesto you are saying this is what they want to do. So you have identified the problems already. What we are left with is the solution. Now what NDC is clearly doing is now going to set the grounds to identify problems.
As if they don’t know what is wrong with Ghana. And now they want to find out what is wrong with Ghana. Do you see the kind of attitude of politicians? These are all political gimmicks. And I want us as much as possible to avoid this kind of business.
Let’s be sincere to citizens. Dissolve this committee; send this committee to form the board for the National Development Planning Commission,” He concluded.
