Minister-Designate Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak proposes mandatory body cameras for police

Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the Minister-Designate for the Interior, has proposed making body cameras mandatory for police officers throughout Ghana to tackle issues like extortion and brutality.

In his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, January 24, Muntaka emphasized that the introduction of body cameras would play a vital role in improving police accountability and rebuilding public confidence in the Ghana Police Service.

“There has been rising public outcry against incidents of police brutality and extortion, which have significantly eroded confidence in our law enforcement agencies,” Muntaka said.

He proposed a policy mandating that all police officers wear and activate body cameras while on duty.

“We will ensure that if you are a police officer and you have to step out, then you have your body camera on to take away all the ambiguity and the troubles,” he explained.

“When you put the body camera on, everywhere you are, you are being recorded. So that when you are on the road extorting money and brutalizing others, it will show and record whatever the police officer is doing.”

He stated that his proposal aims to eliminate the uncertainty surrounding allegations of police misconduct and foster greater public trust in the police force.
