The ailing state of the movie industry has helped filter out the irrelevant productions

Renowned Ghanaian actor Fiifi Coleman has raised concerns about the decline of the local movie industry, acknowledging its downturn while recognizing its role in weeding out substandard productions.

“The ailing state of the movie industry has terminated irrelevant and unimportant productions from the good ones,” Coleman remarked. He noted that, at one point, the industry was overwhelmed by producers who prioritized profit over quality, resulting in movies with weak storylines, poor production quality, and overall mediocrity.

He highlighted how an oversaturation of poorly produced films, driven by profit motives, has led to a filtering process that leaves only quality filmmakers standing.

“Yes, the industry has gone down, but it has also come to help. At some point, anyone would rise up and call themselves producers. The industry was saturated with movies that had poor storylines, poor quality—you name it. Everything was just poor. Even though the industry isn’t like before, most of the producers left are the good ones,” he said.

Coleman called for increased government and private investment to revitalize the industry, stressing the importance of initiatives such as new cinemas to support sustainable growth and preserve Ghana’s rich storytelling heritage.
